"100% renewable" can still mean burning gas at 7pm.
Most clean-power claims today rest on Energy Attribute Certificates — RECs and Guarantees of Origin — bought and cancelled on an annual basis. A company can buy a certificate for solar generated at noon in June to offset electricity it drew from a gas-heavy grid at 9pm in December, and the claim still checks out under a calendar-year total.
That gap matters more every year as more demand shows up exactly when clean supply doesn't: EV charging after dark, data centres running flat around the clock, heat pumps in winter evenings. Matching at the year level hides the hours that actually need new investment.
Hourly matching closes that gap. It's the accounting basis behind 24/7 carbon-free energy (24/7 CFE) — a goal already adopted by the U.S. federal government, C40 member cities, and a growing list of corporate buyers, and formalised globally through the UN 24/7 CFE Compact.
